Functional Pottery
Through functional pottery I aim to bring joy to the mundane and quiet moments in our daily lives, creating objects that are both comfortable to use and beautiful to look at. I’m drawn to surfaces that have layered visual interest, utilizing color, negative space, and texture. Though the decoration of the pot is very important to me, more important is my desire to create a pot, whether that be a mug or jar, that calls to the hand and invokes a desire to be held or used. My pottery is an exploration in marrying these two elements, the visual and the sensorial.
Sculptural Work
The subject of my ceramic sculptures are creatures that are generally passed by, hidden, unnoticed, or simply ignored. I find these creatures to be both curious and a bit wondrous, and through my work aim to draw attention to them by invoking a sense of curiosity and wonder from the viewer. Mushrooms are a ubiquitous element in my work, just as fungi inhabit almost every aspect of our own lives, they flourish through my ceramic creations. Experiencing and observing nature informs my art practice and likewise, my art practice affects my view and appreciation of the natural world.
